2018 CrossFit Regionals

What is the CrossFit Regionals?

And should I go?

If you're a part of a CrossFit gym, chances are you've heard some buzz around an upcoming event - Regionals. Even if you're not, the excitement around the competitive CrossFit season attracts much of the fitness community and maybe you've just tuned in.

Within CrossFit, the Regionals events highlights a spectator event of the year in which the top athletes of the sport compete for qualifying spots to the CrossFit Games. If you were around in February, you may have participated in the CrossFit Open, the kickoff to the CrossFit season in which the entire community shares a leaderboard. The top finishers of the Open receive invitations to one of the regional events hosted around the world.

This year, nine Regionals events will be spread out across three weekends starting on May 18. Individual men, women and teams will compete in multiple events for three days for qualifying entry to the climax of the season, the CrossFit Games. Each year the events are different and like the sport itself, they have evolved a long way from the inauguration of the Games in 2007. New to the competition floor this year are ramps and stairs ...to be navigated by handstand.

As the geographical regions for competition condense and athletes become more competitive, the Regionals events have become spectacular events for witnessing the outer bounds of human performance and athlete willpower. Competitors must show proficiency in physical endurance, skills and strength as they test themselves against the barbells, dumbbells, rowing machines and whatever else event director Dave Castro throws their way.

Though the Games are known for the "unknown and unknowable" in which athletes are often left in the dark until even moments before an event, the Regionals events are pre-announced, allowing athletes and teams time to practice up to a couple of weeks before the competition. This makes the Regionals an especially crucial time to avoid error for the top competitors and an opportunity for everyone to set personal records.

But while the uproar centers around the seemingly superhuman feats of the arena, you'll have to capture the entire event to know what Regionals really is. There's a lot more happening outside of the barrier of coaches, super fans, sponsor banners and camera crew than what happens within them.

In the stands and shopping Vendor Village you'll find the community of CrossFit. Many of them wear brightly colored Reebok Nano's and you'll see a lot of shirts off. Some of them look fit, some of them look really fit, and some of them struggle to get to the top of the bleachers. Some eat chicken and quinoa from Tupperware as they watch and some of them are double fisting beers. Many of them do CrossFit, some of them don't, a few never will. A few of them are coaches or CrossFit athletes themselves, some come from other sports or health backgrounds and the others are attorneys, musicians, moms, dads, students, military, teachers, entertainers, doctors and more.

And despite every other reason to stay home, the community shows up. They play friendly games in the Village, bring in home made signs and start chants from the bleachers for the final standing competitor - no one stops cheering until the last person is finished. They don't heckle and they don't hassle and fans aren't fighting - they simply come to light up the stage.

Whether you've done CrossFit or you do health and fitness your own way or maybe none at all, the CrossFit Regionals experience displays a spectrum broad enough that it just might be worth your weekend.
