What is TENS?

TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) are tiny electrical pulses delivered through a device which can help alleviate pain through two different means. By stimulating the sensory nerves TENS produces high levels of endorphins to help ease body pain. The other method of pain relief, known as GATE Control Theory, works to block pain signals to the brain.

How is EMS Different Than TENS?

EMS (Electrical muscle stimulation) is often confused with TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation), a common modality used in physical therapy offices. Compex EMS provides an electrical current at a specifically designed frequency to target motor nerves. These nerves activate the muscle to contract based on the amount of resistance applied through the device. The brain goes through a similar process when actual weights are lifted.

TENS is designed to target sensory nerves. Typically, sensory nerves receive a signal that they relay to the brain, the brain then decides if the stimulus is painful, soft, warm, etc. When using a TENS program the goal is to alleviate pain by either inducing an endorphin release (Low Frequency TENS programs) or to block the pain signals to the brain through the Gate Theory (High Frequency TENS programs).

COMPEX PERFORMANCE 2.0 with TENS: 6 PROGRAMS

  • Endurance

This program is designed to activate the aerobic metabolism muscle fibers during the session. Program helps to establish or improve basic muscle endurance and is designed to increase the average intensity of muscle effort over that must be maintained over a long period of time.

  • Resistance

Designed to activate the anaerobic metabolism of the muscle, this program helps increase the time a muscle can maintain a higher work level. It is designed for sporting activities, which are characterized by a need for intense efforts to be maintained or repeated to approach the limit of muscle exhaustion.

  • Strength

Designed to help increase strength by imposing a high and instantaneous power working level on the muscles. It is specifically designed for sports characterized by a need for maximum but very brief strength contractions lasting 5-60s.

  • Prewarm Up

Produces a muscle twitch. Runs at a low frequency and increases local blood flow, warming the muscle tissue, and increase reaction of the muscles prior to a workout or competition.

  • Training Recovery / (Active Recovery)

Produces a muscle twitch at a low frequency. Increases local blood flow, leading to a faster reduction of lactic acid than mere rest, promotes muscle relaxation and helps enable a faster recovery.

  • Pain Relief (TENS)

The Pain Relief TENS program is used to temporarily alleviate localized pain.

Explosive Strength

Helps to increase the speed with which maximum muscle strength can be supplied. Designed to improve performance in activities of very brief duration such as jumping, sprinting and throwing.

Prewarm Up

Produces a muscle twitch. Runs at a low frequency and increases local blood flow, warming the muscle tissue, and increase reaction of the muscles prior to a workout or competition.

Training Recovery / (Active Recovery)

Produces a muscle twitch at a low frequency. Increases local blood flow, leading to a faster reduction of lactic acid than mere rest, promotes muscle relaxation and helps enable a faster recovery.

Competition Recovery / (Recovery Plus®)

Runs at a lower frequency for inducing gentle muscle twitches, increase local blood flow, generate endorphins (the body's natural analgesic) and promotes muscle relaxation when muscles are fatigued after a vigorous workout or competition.

Muscle Relaxation / (Massage)

Produces a muscle twitch. Runs at the lowest frequency possible to help relax muscles that are fatigued after a workout or competition.

Potentiation

Recommended before a workout or competition, especially for sports requiring speed and velocity. Applied briefly just before the beginning of a competition, it offers immediate, well potentiated muscle fibers and an optimal level of performance.

Pain Relief (TENS)

I really enjoy using this product!

I never thought I needed it, but now it has become a regular part of my workout recovery.

I recommend this product to anyone who has those nagging injuries. Works great for pain relief and muscle recovery.
Pros: I went on a few long hikes and usually really sore after all the elevation gain. I used the recovery feature to flush out the lactic acid in hopes of not being as sore the next day. I did indeed feel fresher and was easily able to get back in the gym. Without the EMS device, I typically take the next day as a rest day. The TENS feature is extremely helpful. I get plantar fasciitis regularly and have a bad ankle from constantly injuring it throughout my basketball days. Sometimes the pain is bad enough to where I can’t even walk. Now, I just pop on the pads and crank up the TENS as high as I can withstand. The pain subsides within 5-10 minutes and helps loosen the area. This is not the only thing I do to help rehabilitate these areas, but definitely an added benefit to the recovery routine. Putting the pads on your traps at a lower level feels like a massage. I always get up relaxed and refreshed. I have used the strength feature a few times (while watching TV) and feel sore after the workouts, so I do feel like I am building muscle. Although, my preferred method has always been going to the gym. Maybe I will warm up to the idea of supplementing my workouts with this in the future.
Cons: There is a learning curve on where to place the pads. The best way I learned how to place the pads was to go on both their website for visual diagrams and Youtube for quick instructional videos. The placement pads will eventually need to be replaced.

To my surprise it really helped!

After a lifetime of traditional sports and action sports like surfing and snowboarding, I think it has finally caught up with me at 50. My lower back has taken the brunt of the abuse (fun) over the years, and these days I cannot do any activities without any repercussions. Nowadays after any activity, I usually have to resort to ice and NSAIDs to manage the pain. However, on a recent snowboarding trip, my friend introduced me to one of these Compex units and the TENS mode to help me get my back through the trip. To my surprise it really helped, and I decided to take the plunge on getting one of these for myself. I have only had this unit for around 2 weeks and have used it about 7 times so far. I have been using it mainly before and after mountain biking lately. It seems to be working as well as the unit I tried on my snowboarding trip. In addition to the physical benefits, I'm impressed with the battery life so far. I'm still running on the original charge. I'm also impressed with the build quality. It seemed like something you would find at a sports medicine clinic. It is also nice to know it has a long warranty period as well. Anyway, I'm very happy with this purchase and curious to start trying out other features of this unit.
Pros: -Easy to use -Everything you need to get started is in the box -Provides me great temporary relief when back pain is at its peak -Warranty length (2 years, and I think you can get an extra year if you register the device) -Battery life -Medical grade quality
Cons: -Documentation in the box is a little sparse, but easily found more comprehensive documentation on Compex's website. -Not sure of the long term cost of pads.

Much better than low cost TENS units

I'm 64 and still very active. I began using tens in the early 1980s. (At that time, a doctor's prescription was needed. Today, OTC [over the counter] units are readily available.) Unfortunately, many of the OTC units are underpowered and not as effective as a doctor's prescribed unit. I've used tens for 20-plus years - a variety of models from different manufacturers, both OTC and prescribed.

I've used the Compex Performance 2 almost daily for one month since it was delivered.

    These are my initial thoughts:

I like the physical size and build quality of the control unit. It has a solid, tactile feel. The wire leads are sufficiently long, institutional quality, and firmly lock into the control. The display is large, well-lighted, and has an intuitive graphic user interface. The power range is exceptional. I don't think anyone could tolerate this unit maxed out. I like the built-in rechargeable batteries.
The electrodes are important components. The supplied electrodes are excellent. This is the first muscle stimulator/tens combination unit I have purchased. After using this combination, I prefer it to an independent tens unit. My initial short-term opinion is, I'm satisfied and would recommend this unit. The only regret I have is maybe not spending the additional money for the Sport Elite 2.0.
Pros: Very Powerful - Power Range is Exceptional! Built-in Rechargeable Batteries Muscle Stimulator + TENS, not just TENS only
Cons: Go to higher level model if you can afford it
